PANAMA CITY — The Panamanian government announced today a 500% transit tariff on McDonald’s cargo ships heading to the United States.

Officials say the measure is a strategic move in retaliation against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent suggestion to reclaim the canal as a “totally American asset.”

Panama’s Minister of Foodstuff, Carlos Montoya, delivered the announcement during a press conference.

“If Trump thinks he can mess with our canal, we’re going to make him pay in burgers and buns,” Montoya declared. “From now on, every McBacon and McNugget crossing our waters will come with a 500% tariff.”

The fast food giant has already expressed concern, noting that the tariff could disrupt the flow of essential supplies such as ketchup, frozen patties, and indestructible sesame seed buns.

Meanwhile, Panamanians have begun celebrating what they’re calling the “Big Mac Blowback,” with local burger joints offering Trump-themed menu specials like the “Canal Closer Combo” and the “Tariff Tower Burger.”
