WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump took to the microphone this morning to comment the ongoing government shutdown.
With characteristic confidence, Trump declared, “As I have stated before, the only person responsible for the government shutdown, this mess is the President. Total disaster. Terrible leadership.”
Reporters waited for him to specify which president he meant – until it became painfully clear that Trump believed he was talking about himself.
Trump criticized “the current administration” for failing to make a deal, repeatedly gesturing at himself while doing so. “The President should be ashamed. He should step up and negotiate,” Trump said, before adding: “I know him well. He’s a great guy, but he’s being very weak right now.”
Confused staff members attempted to gently remind Trump that he is the one, in fact, holding office, but were met with a firm “Fake news!” statement.
Political analysts say this may mark a new frontier in American politics: a president holding the current president accountable, while accidentally referring to himself.
Meanwhile, the government remains shut down, waiting for a president—any president—to remember whose job it is to fix it.
