COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – The Danish Parliament has officially voted to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Denmark. This decision is seen as a reply to President Donald Trump’s several claims that Greenland, an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark, should be taken over by the U.S.A.
The decision, passed unanimously in a particularly enthusiastic atmosphere, aims to honor the legendary Danish Vikings who, according to old Danish sagas, set sail for warmer waters nearly 900 years ago.
“We’ve been calling it the Gulf of Mexico for too long,” declared Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. ““This is simply correcting a historical injustice.”
“It’s time to correct this oversight and acknowledge the bravery of our seafaring ancestors, who supposedly enjoyed Caribbean cruises long before Columbus,” Frederiksen said.
Experts have expressed skepticism about this claim, but the Danish government insists a recently discovered “very old” wooden boat in a Copenhagen museum is undeniable proof.
Reactions to the decision have been mixed – Mexico has yet to comment, and Google Maps developers are reportedly baffled with serious confusion.
However, Denmark remains firm in its stance. “Next, we might take a look at renaming the Pacific Ocean,” one MP mused. “After all, the Vikings were pretty adventurous, and who’s to say they didn’t make it there too?”
