The tech billionaire and Twitter (or X, depending on who you ask) owner Elon Musk has proposed a novel solution to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. Musk urged Russia to cede the Russian city of Belgorod to Ukraine.
Musk shared his idea via a late-night post, stating that Belgorod could be the perfect buffer zone. “Belgorod could be the perfect buffer zone. Russia gets peace, Ukraine gets a nice new city. Everyone wins! Also, Belgorod sounds more Ukrainian than Russian. Just saying.”
The proposal comes amidst reports of Ukrainian forces making unexpected gains in Russia’s Kursk region. While Ukrainian officials declined to confirm these developments, a Ukrainian soldier was seen in a TikTok video hoisting a flag on what appeared to be a Kursk Oblast welcome sign, saying, “We’re just visiting.”
Musk’s tweet immediately went viral due to the hashtag #BelgorodForPeace.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the proposal, calling Musk “a man with too much free time.”
The drama intensified when Musk tagged Pope Francis in a follow-up tweet, suggesting the Vatican mediate negotiations, to which the Pope has yet to respond.
In true Musk fashion, he ended the night with a poll for his followers: “Belgorod for Ukraine? Yes or No.”
