BRUSSELS, BELGIUM –  At a summit in Brussels, Belgium yesterday, European Union leaders discussed new tougher sanctions against Belarus, a spokesman for European Council President Charles Michel said late in the evening.

An extraordinary European Council summit was convened as a reaction after the Belarussian forced a Ryanair commercial aircraft to land in Minsk, where a Belarusian journalist and opposition activist was detained.

As a result of the meeting, the leaders of the EU agreed to impose additional extremely harsh sanctions on Belarus. In detail, European leaders unanimously decided not to send a traditional Christmas card to the President of Belarus this year!

“The European Union has put a question on the table about the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk. This time, we reached a unanimous decision that the European Union must react to President Lukashenko’s unprecedented action, and in response, the European Union must impose extremely severe sanctions on Belarus,” the spokesman confirmed.

Shortly afterwards, Michel personally explained to journalists that, after a tense and heated debate between European leaders, the Council reached the agreement that the extraordinary response of the President of Belarus must be followed by an exceptionally tough response from the European Union.

To express their determination and strong condemnation, European leaders agreed that none of them would send a traditional Christmas card with their warm Christmas wishes to the President of Belarus this Christmas.

“We hope that this very strong sanction is a tough enough lesson for the President of Belarus. In order to get Christmas cards with the season greetings from European leaders, one must not force planes from other countries to land in Minsk,” explained Michel.
